7—The South Pole
The pole of the South Pole really does exist, but it moves about 3 meters a year. Each summer the scientists have to reposition it to its correct spot, 90 degrees south latitude. How does the pole move? Is someone playing a practical joke? By the time you've completed this field trip you should be able to answer that! This photo is of the Ceremonial South Pole (the globe atop the red and black ribboned pole). It is used for ceremonial purposes and does NOT get repositioned each year.
