7—Krakatau Island
Krakatau Island is located in Indonesia between the larger islands of Sumatra and Java, and was created about 416 A.D. by the caldera collapse of Krakatau Volcano. In 1883, another caldera collapse and eruption created one of the largest explosions in earth's recorded history and left only 1/3 of Krakatau Island above water. The eruption was heard over 1/13th of the earth's surface, and more than 36,000 people perished, primarily due to gigantic waves. The volcanic "dust veil" filtered out the sun's heat and reduced global temperatures in the year after the eruption. Temperatures did not return to normal for five years afterwards.
