2—Cascades Volcano Observatory
Although volcanoes can create beautiful places like the Hawaiian islands, they can also cause terrible destruction. Some volcanoes are particularly dangerous because they explode just like a bomb, sending earth, hot ash, gases, and steam into the air. This photo illustrates some of the most recent activity at Mount St. Helens. The links on this page take you to the United States Geological Survey's Cascades Volcano Observatory web site. You can see what happened when Mt. St. Helens erupted in Washington in 1980, and also find out about current activity. It's a great site, so take your time.
